Support choristers of the future at Worcester Cathedral

Worcester Cathedral is celebrating its choral scholars in a special evening of music and reflection.

Hosted at The Old Palace, the event will feature choral and solo performances by the cathedral’s choral scholars, alongside personal reflections on their musical journeys.

Dominic Lee, a former tenor choral scholar, shared the impact of his experience at the cathedral.

He said: “That year at the Cathedral was a real turning point as it helped me realise that my future firmly belonged in music.”

The event also offers an opportunity to learn how charitable support can help nurture the next generation of talent.

The evening will raise funds for the John Paul Hoskins Choral Scholar Appeal, which honours the cathedral’s former precentor and his dedication to cathedral music.

The appeal aims to raise £45,000 to fund a choral scholar position for the next six years, beginning in September.

The funding will ensure the appointment of an alto, tenor, or bass scholar each year, with selection based on merit and ability alone.

Samuel Hudson, cathedral organist and director of music, said: “Our choral scholars have the opportunity to work at the centre of a vibrant cathedral music department.”

Further support for the cathedral’s music is coming from its youngest performers.

A group of choristers will take part in the AJ Bell Junior and Mini Great Birmingham Run to raise funds for both the cathedral and the Worcester Cathedral Choristers Association (WCCA).

The WCCA supports the Cathedral Choir, Voluntary Choir, and Youth Choir, and provides assistance to choristers and their families.

The young runners hope to raise at least £750, which will be split evenly between the WCCA and the wider cathedral music team.
