‘Shocking’ – What’s blocking this canal is causing problems for birds and boats

Birds and boats are being forced to weave through dumped Asda shopping trolleys clogging a canal.

Trolleys have been left piled up in the Worcester and Birmingham Canal near Shrub Hill Retail Park.

On Thursday morning (June 25), waterfowl could be seen climbing on and swimming around a submerged trolleys from the Asda supermarket, which is located just across the road.

The trolleys are in the same part of the canal where B&M trolleys were piled up earlier this month.

Richard Ford, from Shardlow in Derbyshire, was travelling on the canal in his narrowboat on Wednesday (June 24), when he spotted the mess.

“After leaving the River Severn, we continued through Diglis Basin up the canal and then we were shocked and surprised to see five shopping trolleys lurking in the canal,” he said.

“There was another abandoned shopping trolley on the towpath, presumably waiting to be reunited with its metallic mates.

“Another underwater shopping trolley greeted us at Bridge 6 with its handlebars peeping out of the water.

“The nearest supermarket is Asda so that’s almost certainly where they all came from.”

‘Shocking’

While Mr Ford is no stranger to hazards in the water, he said it was “shocking” to see so many in one place.

Luckily, his boat escaped any damage.

“We were concerned with avoiding the hazards that could potentially cause thousands of pounds of damage to our propeller and engine,” he said.

“Occasionally, one encounters hazards like fallen trees, sunken boats, prams, wheelie bins, plastic bags and the occasional shopping trolley but we’ve never seen so many trolleys piled up in one place before.

“It’s really shocking.”

What to do if you spot abandoned trolleys

Asda said it works with a collection service to recover abandoned trolleys.

“The supermarket giant has advised people what to do if they see trolleys somewhere they shouldn’t be.

A spokesperson said. “While we know most customers use our trolleys responsibly, we work with a trolley collection partner to help recover any that are taken away from our stores and left where they shouldn’t be.

“If anyone spots an abandoned trolley, they can let us know by calling 0800 1860 600, emailing request@collextrolley.com or using the Collex app, so it can be collected and returned as quickly as possible.”
