KIT Harington will make his Wizarding World debut with a leading role in the second season of Harry Potter.
The actor, most famous for his role as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has been announced as Gilderoy Lockhart in the HBO series.
X-Men star Nicholas Hoult had been announced to be playing the celebrity turned Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher for the adaptation of The Chamber of Secrets less than two weeks ago, but has since stepped back from the project due to scheduling conflicts.
Harington’s casting was announced on the Harry Potter Instagram account with a photo of the 39-year-old alongside the caption: “Before we begin year two at Hogwarts, there has been a slight change due to schedule.
“Kit Harington will be stepping into the role of Gilderoy Lockhart.”

Harington, who grew up in Worcestershire, has a good rapport with Lockhart’s character, having already voiced him in the full-cast Harry Potter audiobooks released between November 2025 and May 2026.
He and Arabella Stanton, who plays Hermione Granger in the series, are the only actors to reprise their roles from the audiobook series in live action.
