A couple who once shared the stage are now working together to inspire young performers.
Richard Compton, Artistic Director and co-owner of Footlights Worcester, and his wife Debbie, met while acting for a touring theatre company and now bring a combined wealth of professional experience to Footlights Worcester.
Mr Compton has appeared in stage productions such as Equus at the Oldham Theatre and Cabaret at the Palace Theatre, as well as TV shows including Hollyoaks, The Bill, Casualty, and Holby City.
Mrs Compton joined a local stage school at the age of 13 and was a frequent actor on the TV series Byker Grove, before studying drama at Liverpool University and performing in the West End.
The pair took on the Footlights Worcester franchise to share their passion for performance with the next generation.
Mr Compton said: “We’ve both spent our lives in the performing arts – as actors, directors and educators – and we’ve always been passionate about sharing that experience with young people.
“Footlights stood out to us because of its ethos of being ‘Not Just a Stage School.’
“It felt like the perfect way to combine our professional experience with our love of teaching in a supportive, inspiring environment.”
Each Saturday, the couple lead sessions for around 90 students and parents. Children aged three to four begin first, followed by older groups who start with a group warm-up before splitting into age-based sessions led by specialist tutors.
The couple’s favourite part of running the franchise is watching students grow in confidence.
They said: “Without a doubt, it’s seeing the growth in our students. Watching a child come in shy and unsure of themselves and then develop confidence, friendships and a love for performing is incredibly rewarding. Knowing we’re helping young people grow both on and off the stage is what makes it all worthwhile.”
They hope to expand their impact even further in the future.
They said: “We would love to open more classes both for young people and adults and our dream is to own our own theatre one day.”
