A newly transformed public space is hoped to become a “cherished part” of daily city life.
Worcester Cathedral has completed significant improvements to College Yard in Worcester, aimed at making the area more welcoming, attractive and accessible for visitors and residents.
The Very Revd Dr Stephen Edwards, Dean of Worcester, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and to thank the funders who have made this project possible.
“The transformation of College Yard has strengthened the connection between the Cathedral and the city, creating an open and welcoming space in front of the Cathedral for everyone to enjoy.
“This outdoor area is a gift to the city – a place of beauty, connection and calm.
“We hope it becomes a cherished part of the community’s daily rhythm.
“It reconnects this space with its historic purpose as a place of welcome, reflection and remembrance, while also offering an invitation of hope for the future.”
The redesigned space now features a central pathway linking the cathedral with the city centre, enhanced landscaping, and thoughtfully designed public space.
The improvements aim to encourage people to pause and enjoy the peaceful surroundings as they approach the cathedral.
To mark the completion, a special service of thanksgiving and blessing was held at the cathedral, attended by funders, supporters and guests.
Among the attendees were representatives from the Kildare Trust.
Councillor Tor Pingree, Mayor of Worcester, was also present.
The guests were invited to explore the revamped College Yard after the service.
The scheme focuses on accessibility and inclusivity, supporting the cathedral’s vision to welcome all visitors.
Construction began in September 2024. The project was delivered by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd in partnership with Worcestershire Archaeology and the cathedral team.
Funding and support came from the Kildare Trust, the Wolfson Foundation, the Rowlands Trust, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Towns Deal Levelling Up Fund, the Friends of Worcester Cathedral, and a number of anonymous donors.
Worcester Cathedral continues to serve as a place of prayer, learning, and welcome.
The refreshed College Yard is intended to reflect these values and extend its welcome outdoors.
