Family-run Worcestershire nursery celebrates 125 years in business

A Worcestershire tree nursery has marked 125 years of horticultural achievement.

Frank P. Matthews Trees, based in Worcestershire, celebrated the milestone with an industry open day on July 1, welcoming guests from across the horticultural sector.

Founded in 1901, the fourth-generation family business supplies fruit and ornamental trees across the UK, including to the Royal estate.

Steph Dunn James, director of Frank P. Matthews, said: “Celebrating 125 years is a proud achievement for everyone connected with the nursery.

“The open day was a wonderful opportunity to thank our customers, partners, suppliers, and friends of the business for their continued support.

“It was fantastic to welcome so many visitors from across the industry and to share what makes our nursery special.”

Visitors were offered tractor tours of the nursery, live grafting demonstrations, and informal talks with the team.

Discussions covered the future of tree growing, plant breeding, and the nursery’s focus on sustainability and heritage fruit varieties.

Attendees also enjoyed refreshments, including ice cream and cake.

Ms Dunn James said: “As we reflect on our history, we are equally excited about the future, with new varieties, continued innovation, and a commitment to helping gardeners, growers, and landscape professionals grow better trees.”

Earlier this year, the nursery received a Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for its display of Malus trees.

Frank P. Matthews currently produces more than one million trees annually and employs 80 full-time and seasonal staff.

The business works closely with leading breeders to introduce new cultivars while preserving heritage varieties essential to the UK’s horticultural diversity.

Originally established on six acres of rented land in Middlesex, the nursery relocated to Worcestershire in 1956.

Frank P. Matthews Trees remains committed to the values that have guided it for more than a century: family, expertise, innovation, and a passion for growing.
