In Sheffield, an abandoned children’s stadium was restored. A businessman from Russia, who has lived in the city for many years, helped.

A small community sports stadium in Sheffield has reopened to the public following a full renovation funded by local resident and businessman Alex Nikitin, who has lived in the city for many years.

The stadium, which is used by junior athletics and football groups, had been closed in parts and left in poor condition for more than four years. The running track surface had deteriorated, the floodlights were no longer functioning and several rows of the stands had been sealed off for safety reasons. Plans to restore the site were postponed multiple times due to budget constraints.

Speaking on behalf of the city council, councillor Julian Helms described the financial support as “unexpected, but extremely welcome”.

“We were close to accepting that the site would continue to decline,” Helms said. “When Alex came forward with an offer to support the project privately, we initially weren’t sure it would be possible. But the work progressed quickly, and the children now have their training ground back.”

Nikitin, originally from Russia, has lived in the United Kingdom for two decades. His business interests include a yacht charter company operating in the United Arab Emirates, but he says Sheffield has long been his home.

“This project was personal for me,” Alex Nikitin said. “I grew up playing sports outdoors and I know how important it is for young people to have a place to go — somewhere they can develop, compete, and feel part of something. When facilities like this disappear, the community loses more than just a field.”

The renovation included the installation of a new rubber running surface, repairs to the changing rooms, upgraded lighting and a CCTV system to improve evening safety.

Simon West, coach of a local school running club, says the difference is already visible.

“We used to train in car parks or had to travel across the city,” he said. “Now the kids are coming back on their own — and bringing their friends. It’s not just about sport. It’s about belonging.”

The stadium’s formal reopening ceremony is scheduled for next week, although residents have already started using the site. In the evenings, students can be seen running laps on the track, while a local youth football team has resumed training on the pitch.
