Bid submitted to make Evesham a Town of Culture

A BID has been submitted in hopes of making Evesham become the next Town of Culture.

Evesham Place Board and Evesham Town Council have submitted an expression of interest bid to the national Town of Culture programme.

If shortlisted, Evesham Place Board has promised to engage with the community.

Charlotte Hampson, vice chair of Evesham Place Board said: “We are hopeful that we will be shortlisted for the next round and at that point, we will be undertaking a meaningful and inclusive community engagement process.

“We would like to also note that, as with all the work that is undertaken by the Place Board, we endeavour to retain the benefit it can have to the town, and this is no exception.

“Given the work that has gone into this Expression of Interest, regardless of the outcome, we will look to use this as a launch point for driving forward a more robust, cultural strategy for the town.”

The UK Town of Culture will be awarded £3 million for a 6-month cultural programme.

The money can be used for cultural activities, festivals, local infrastructure improvements, and more.

The two finalists will each receive £250,000.

John Clatworthy, mayor of Evesham, said: “It’s an important thing and hopefully everyone will be able to get involved because it will affect the whole community.

“It’s great that the Evesham Place Board and Evesham Town Council are looking into it, and congratulations to them.

“It would be great if Evesham won.

“It would bring businesses and greater prosperity to Evesham.

“We’ve seen the value and what it has brought to other towns in the UK.

“If the same happens in Evesham, it will put the town ever more on the map and enhance the situation where Evesham was regarded as the second best place to live in the UK.”
