Pet crematorium under investigation after corpses left outside

A HEREFORDSHIRE pet crematorium is being investigated after the bodies of deceased animals were found in bags outside.

Herefordshire Council has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing after reports were made about Animal Funeral Services, based at Litfield House Farm in Kington, after photos emerged that appeared to show an unlocked van filled with bags full of animal corpses, and a pile of ashes and bones on the site.

A spokesperson for Herefordshire Council said they are aware of concerns that have been raised and its animal health team is making enquiries to establish the circumstances.

“We are working with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), the RSPCA and other relevant agencies as part of the ongoing investigations and will take appropriate action within the Council’s responsibilities and powers,” the spokesperson added.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we will continue to work closely with the relevant agencies as their investigations progress.”

A spokesperson for Brookfield Vets, which has a branch in both Hereford and Ledbury, has reassured clients that the practice no longer uses Animal Funeral Services and hasn’t done for “several months”.

“We served notice to terminate our contract at the end of 2025 due to communication difficulties,” they said.

The spokesperson said that they were unaware of the state of the premises or “for how long they have been in this condition.”

They added that they had visited the premises over the years, and “never had any cause for concern.

“We understand that all pet cremation services are inspected annually by APHA.”

Animal Funeral Services has been contacted for comment.
