James May has talked about a potential TV reunion with his fellow Top Gear and Grand Tour stars Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.
The 63‑year‑old, who spent 15 years on BBC’s Top Gear before moving with his co‑hosts to Amazon’s The Grand Tour for a further eight years, told LBC that the trio had already agreed they did not want to drag the show out forever.
He said they felt they had “exhausted” the format and were keen not to “overstay their welcome”, preferring to bow out while viewers still loved the programme.
Mr May explained that the production company behind The Grand Tour had wound down last year and that, for now at least, there is nothing concrete on the table to bring the three presenters back together on screen.

“You should never say never, should you, because then somebody will dig it up and hold it against you, but there is nothing planned,” he said.
The presenter admitted age and timing play a part in his thinking as he added: “I find it slightly difficult to envisage us making a comeback as we’re knocking on a bit.
“And there comes a point where you should let things lie.”
Looking back on their decision to end The Grand Tour with the 2024 special One For The Road, Mr May said the trio had always tried to follow a simple bit of showbusiness wisdom.

“There is a saying in showbusiness, isn’t there, that you should leave the audience wanting more and hopefully we have,” he said.
He added that, for all the high‑octane stunts and globe‑trotting adventures, the real challenge had been knowing when to stop.
“We always used to say, partly in jest, but actually we meant it, that the most difficult thing we had to do was to land it safely and not fly it into the cliffs,” revealed Mr May.
“And I think we just about did. But if you go on too long, you do end up flying it into the cliff.”
