The school where ‘children hold doors open for others’

CARING pupils at a Worcestershire primary school “hold doors open for others”, according to a new Ofsted report.

Cutnall Green CofE Primary School, in School Lane, Droitwich, received high praise after an inspection on June 9.

The setting, which is attended by 162 pupils, was found to meet the ‘expected standard’ in all of the areas it was assessed on.

Inspectors found: “Pupils’ behaviour is a strength of the school.

“They hold doors open for others and give a warm welcome to visitors.

“The school’s vision, ‘love, learn and be extraordinary’, is well understood.

“Pupils are kind and caring. They are respectful of each other and bullying is rare. If pupils fall out, staff quickly help them make up and move on.”

The school met expected standards in the achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, early years, inclusion, leadership and governance and personal development and wellbeing categories.

Children, including disadvantaged pupils, achieve close to or above national averages at the expected standard in reading, writing, and mathematics by the end of key stage 2.

Inspectors also highlighted pupils’ outcomes in phonics, which achieved above national averages over the last three years.

The report further commends attendance and behaviour, stating that “for most pupils, absence is rare.”

It adds that pupils enjoy coming to the school, which is part of the Rivers CofE Multi Academy Trust.

The report also highlights Cutnall’s inclusion, stating that “leaders have established a culture where inclusion is valued and visible in daily school life.”

Leadership and governance was another strength, with inspectors finding that “leaders ensure that the curriculum is ambitious and inclusive.”

The report also praises the school’s personal development and wellbeing, stating that “the school provides an appropriate curriculum for personal, social and health education (PSHE), starting in the early years.”

The report concludes by stating that “pupils are happy, safe and learn in a nurturing environment where staff know them well and help them to grow in confidence.”

However, the inspectors did highlight some areas for improvement, advising that “leaders should ensure that all teachers embed the strategies to develop pupils’ transcription skills, including spelling and handwriting, to enable pupils to write at length.”

They also suggest that “leaders should ensure that communication with parents is strengthened by making sure that key information is shared clearly, consistently and in a timely manner, while also providing opportunities for stakeholders to give feedback.”

The report follows Cutnall C of E Preschool being found to be in the top 20 of early years settings in the West Midlands.

The recognition was based on parent reviews, marking its third consecutive year on the list.

The award, given by nursery comparison site daynurseries.co.uk, highlights early years settings across the region that consistently deliver high standards of care and education.
