A SEVEN hundred-year-old pub in a churchyard has delayed reopening after its long-serving landlord departed.
The historic Mug House pub in Claines is known as one of the few pubs in the UK to sit on consecrated land.
However, it closed following the departure of landlord Russell Allen due to ill health.

On Facebook, a spokesperson for The Mug House said: “Dear customers, unfortunately, we won’t be reopening as scheduled due to circumstances outside our control.
“We’re working hard to get everything in place and hope to welcome you very soon.
“Thank you for your patience and support.
“We can’t wait to open our doors.
“Thank you for understanding.”

Pub temporarily closes
The pub has been run by the Allen family for over two decades, first by Judy Allen, and then by son Russell, but this dynasty came to a close following the departure of Mr Allen.

A notice on the entrance to the pub read: “It is with regret that we announce the closure of our pub effective from Monday, June 1, due to Russell’s ill-health.
“This decision has not been taken lightly, and we are grateful for the memories, laughter, and good times shared within these walls.
“We would like to sincerely thank all of our customers, staff, and local supporters who have been part of our journey of the years.
“Your loyalty and support have meant a great deal to us and have helped make the pub a valued part of the community.”
