Reform pulls no confidence motion in council leader at last minute

A motion of no confidence in the leader of Worcestershire County Council was withdrawn at the last minute.

Reform had put forward the motion calling for Matt Jenkins to be removed as leader but failed to get the support it needed from other parties.

Both Reform and the Green Party had engaged in a war of words before Thursday’s (July 16) full council meeting at Pershore Civic Centre.

But in the end, the motion was pulled before councillors had the chance to debate it.

The Green Party said in a statement: “This embarrassing u-turn has been a total waste of council officers’ time.

“They failed to deliver for the people of Worcestershire when they were in power, and now they are failing from the sidelines.

“Their administration was characterised by churn and chaos – the deputy leader resigned at the start of this year, and their leader Jo Monk was ousted by her own councillors because of internal power struggles and financial instability.

“This motion was pointless political point-scoring, designed to undermine the work of a successful coalition focused on delivering sound policies for the people of Worcestershire.

“We can now get on with delivering the progressive policies that will improve local lives and services.”

Reform leader Alan Amos said the administration had “deliberately and arrogantly excluded Reform, the largest group and largest political party” on the council.

“In these circumstances, I have tried to bring about a change in leadership,” he said.

“Last year, Reform made great strides in keeping the council out of the bankruptcy which the Conservatives had left the council in, in 2025.

“With 22 out of 57 councillors, Reform is easily the largest party.

“I have reached out to other parties to try and get them to support a representative and democratic administration led by Reform.

“Unfortunately, they chose to prop up the coalition of chaos and take their allowances and titles.

“For that reason, it was not possible to proceed with the no confidence motion.”

But he vowed: “This is only a temporary reprieve and we are looking to re-table it in the months ahead.”
