A POND in Malvern has turned pink and started emitting an “awful” smell.
People have been told to avoid the area and keep pets away after a pink tinge appeared in the water in Priory Park earlier this week.
Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) said it is aware of the problem and had contacted the Environment Agency.
“We are aware that the pond in Priory Park has turned a shade of pink. We are currently investigating the cause, and the Environmental Agency has been contacted,” a spokesperson for MHDC said.
“Members of the public are advised not to go near the water or allow pets to do so until the issue has been fully resolved. We thank everyone for their co-operation.”

When the Gazette visited the park early on Thursday morning (June 4), the pink colour remained and there was a strong smell, similar to sewage, in the park.
Malvern Gazette readers said they had noticed the issue earlier in the week, with one person even reporting having seen dead fish.

“Some of the fish were surfacing Tuesday afternoon, perhaps due to low oxygen levels,” said Lyndsey Cairns.
Becky Lloyd said: “It did have a really strong smell coming from it on Monday too.”
