A CITY pub’s plan to install solar panels on its roof as part of its ambitions to become Net Zero has been given the green light.
The Barn Owl, located off Berkeley Way to the north-east of the city centre, has been approved the right to fit 52 photovoltaic (PV) panels.
The proposal includes related works such as cabling, inverters and other equipment.
Chris White, Energy Manager at Marston’s – the company that own The Barn Owl – said: “Installing solar panels at The Barn Owl in Worcester is part of our wider commitment to cutting carbon emissions and increasing on-site renewable energy across our pubs.
“Moving to cleaner energy and electrifying our estate is central to our Net Zero ambitions. We’ve already expanded solar to more than 60 sites across our UK pub network, generating over one million kWh of renewable electricity.”
The electricity generated by the solar panels will be used to power the pub and its private living accommodation.
The application proposes panels on the right-hand section of the south-facing roof and on an inner north-facing slope.
The panels will be installed parallel to the roof and raised slightly above the roof covering.

A planning officer’s report states that the installation “would not affect the existing use, access arrangements, or day-to-day operation of the site.”
The Barn Owl will remain fully operational throughout.
The report also concludes that the proposal “would not detract unacceptably from the character or appearance of the surrounding area,” and will not harm nearby residential amenity.
No objections were received during the consultation period.
