School told to improve in five key areas after critical Ofsted inspection

A PRIMARY school in Pershore has been told it needs to make improvements in five key areas after an Ofsted inspection.

Orchard Primary in Cherry Orchard was found to have issues including a high number of pupil absences and below average standards of reading, writing and maths.

Shortcomings were found in achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and learning, inclusion and leadership and governance.

The school met the ‘expected standard’ in a further two categories.

Inspectors found “pupils’ achievement is not secure” and “the nationally recognised combined attainment in reading, writing and mathematics has been below national averages for the last three years.”

The report also found that attendance at the school, part of Avonreach Academy Trust, is “too low” compared with the national average.

“The proportion of pupils who are more persistently absent from school is significantly higher than seen nationally,” inspectors found.

They also assessed that “low-level disruption occurs in some lessons” and “staff do not manage pupils’ behaviour consistently well.”

The report states: “Leaders do not have secure oversight of the impact of the school’s work to support the needs of disadvantaged pupils and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities.”

The school met ‘expected standards’ in early years, where “children get off to a positive start” and “feel secure.”

Personal development and wellbeing also met Ofsted’s criteria, with a “broad and carefully sequenced programme for pupils’ personal development.”

Phil Hanson, CEO of Avonreach Academy Trust, said: “Avonreach Academy Trust and Orchard Primary and Pre-school has welcomed the publication of its recent Ofsted report, which highlights the school’s strong foundations and clear commitment to continuous improvement.

“The inspection confirmed that safeguarding arrangements are effective, with pupils reporting that they feel safe in a caring and supportive environment.

“The report also recognises significant strengths in early years provision and personal development, praising the school’s nurturing relationships, well-planned learning, and wider opportunities that support pupils’ wellbeing, confidence and personal growth.

“Leaders and governors have already taken proactive steps to build on these strengths and address areas identified for further development.

“A clear and focused improvement plan is in place, targeting attendance, curriculum consistency, and support for all learners, including those with additional needs.”

Mr Hanson added: “These actions are designed to deliver sustainable progress and ensure every pupil achieves their full potential.

“The school is proud of its strong track record in key areas such as phonics, writing and wider enrichment, and remains committed to delivering a high-quality education for all pupils.

“With the support of families, staff and the wider community, Orchard Primary and Pre-school is confident about the positive impact of its ongoing improvements and the bright future ahead for its pupils.”
