A pub in Bewdley is set to cut the price of all food and drink by 7.5 per cent for ‘one day only’.
The George Hotel in Load Street will slash the prices of food and drink in support of Tax Equality Day, which is aimed at highlighting the benefits of a VAT reduction in the hospitality industry.
At present, all food and drink in pubs is subject to 20 per cent VAT, compared to supermarkets, which benefit from a zero VAT rate on all food.
Prices at the Wetherspoon pub will be reduced for one day only on Thursday, September 17.
The pub’s manager, Ryan Underhill, said: “We are proud to support the campaign to reduce the level of VAT within the hospitality industry.
“Customers coming to the pub on Thursday, September 17 will find the price of their food and drink is lower than normal.
“We are keen to highlight the amount customers could save if VAT in pubs was lowered permanently.
“A reduction in the level of VAT on a long-term basis will generate growth and create jobs in the important hospitality sector and help the high street, of which pubs are an integral part.”
The announcement of the one-day-only lower prices comes days after JD Wetherspoon confirmed that The George Hotel is set to undergo a £464,000 refurbishment, which will include a staffroom and kitchen upgrade.
The work is primarily maintenance, repair and services upgrades, as well as minor alterations to existing fittings.
No extensions or alterations of the primary structure or principal historic spaces are proposed.
The plans will support the long-term ‘viable use of the building’.
A Wetherspoon spokesperson said: “We are looking to complete a repair and refurbishment scheme in Bewdley which will include a staffroom upgrade, dispense upgrade, kitchen upgrade, new carpet, bar repairs, flooring repairs and cellar repairs for £464k cost.”
