Protest takes place in city centre – but only five people turn up

A PROTEST advertised on social media was set to take place in Worcester city centre – but only five people showed up.

A poster was shared on Facebook about a so-called protest in Cathedral Square but did not mention what it was about.

There is a suggestion it could have been an anti-immigration protest following a stabbing in Belfast.

Safer Neighbourhood officers were set to Cathedral Square on Tuesday evening (June 9) but found only a handful of people had gathered.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said they understand the city protest related to anti-immigration protests in Belfast, following the arrest of a 30-year-old Sudanese man who has been charged with attempted murder.

Stephen Ogilive, a man in his 40s, has been named locally as the victim of the attack.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “Police were aware of social media commentary suggesting there may be protests across the country including in Worcester and Hereford on Tuesday (June 9).

“Safer Neighbourhood Officers attended Cathedral Square where there were approximately five people gathered.

“No incidents were reported.”
