The fire service said the incident was initially called in as a fire but that it was later discovered to be a mechanical fault.
“We received a call at 4.51pm to a car fire on the A449 between the Sixways island and the Claines island,” a Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.
“It was a false alarm. It was a broken down vehicle with mechanical failure.
“The vehicle is stranded in lane one, which is closed.”
By 7.30pm the road had reopened and traffic had returned to normal.
