Play exploring hidden story of medical breakthrough to premiere

A play shedding insight into a forgotten part of one of the greatest medical breakthroughs in history  is set to debut at the Swan Theatre.

‘The Hand of Sarah Nelmes’ will be performed at the theatre on April 27 and 28, 2026, from 7.45pm.

At its heart is the milkmaid Sarah Nelmes — observant, curious, and uncredited — whose courage and insight helps lay the foundations for vaccination, while others take the fame.

The production is a bold, witty, sometimes irreverent, time-shifting drama that asks urgent questions about science, sacrifice, memory and who gets written into history.

This is the premiere of Martin Lytton’s thought-provoking play, which has won the Three Counties Talent Hub playwriting competition 2026.

Tickets are £10.00 each plus £3.50 transaction fee.
