New free service helps children and young people quit smoking

A new stop smoking service has launched to support children and young people.

The Smoke Free Homes service, which offers free one-to-one support to help 12- to 17-year-olds quit smoking, launched on Monday, September 14.

The scheme offers 12 weeks of free one-to-one support from Stop Smoking Support Workers experienced in working with young people.

Appointments can be arranged at school, at home, or in another setting where the young person feels comfortable.

Michelle Caladine, smoking prevention public health nurse specialist and team lead for Smoke Free Homes, said: “Stopping smoking can be difficult, especially for young people who may feel they have to tackle it alone.

“That’s why we’re pleased to be expanding the Smoke Free Homes service to offer dedicated support for 12 to 17 year olds across Worcestershire.”

The service includes access to nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and helps young people understand their smoking habits, set goals, and work towards becoming smoke-free.

Young people can refer themselves to the service whenever they feel ready to quit.

Ms Caladine said: “It’s completely free to access, and there is no pressure or judgement.

“We work with every young person to understand their needs to help them find an approach that works best for them.

“It’s never too early to quit and never too late to ask for help.”

Councillor Alan Bailes, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Worcestershire County Council, said: “Too many people start smoking at a young age, and we know the earlier someone begins, the greater the risk to their health in later life.

“This new service is an important step forward for Worcestershire, giving young people access to specialist advice and practical support in a way that works for them.

“Every young person who chooses to become smoke-free is making a positive investment in their future health and wellbeing.”

The Smoke Free Homes service also supports parents, carers, and other family members living with a child or young person under 19 in Worcestershire who want to quit smoking and create a smoke-free home.
