Dozens of motorcyclists join funeral procession ride-out for ‘smart and caring’ teen

DOZENS of bikers joined the funeral procession for a ‘smart and caring’ 16-year-old from Worcester.

Motorcyclists from across Worcestershire joined a ride-out from Ronkswood to Stourport in honour of Oscar Mason ahead of his funeral on Saturday (October 10).

The first motorcyclists arrived at The Punch Bowl at around 10am, and the sound of engines echoed through the streets for the next 30 minutes as more joined.

Alex Bevan, Mr Mason’s uncle and organiser of the ride-out, said: “There should be a lot of people who turn out, and hopefully they do because it is something he would have wanted.

“Bikers are a very tight-knit group, so it is hard to find a group like it anywhere else.

“You have got your car groups and stuff like that, but bike groups are just a bit different.”

John Bosworth, a member of the Chequered Past Scooter Club, said a lot of people there didn’t know Mr Mason, but took part out of respect and a shared love of motorcycles.

He said: “His uncle got in touch with our club, and the post was shared with our group on Facebook.

“I don’t think many of us knew the kid, but it is respect. He loved his bikes, and as long as you have got two wheels, you are part of a big family.”

The procession left Ronkswood around 10.45am, with the motorcycle procession following Mr Mason’s family.

The 16-year-old died in a car crash in Defford on September 12, when the Volkswagen Polo he had been a passenger in hit a tree on the A4104 at around 9.20pm.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Mason following his death last month.

In a statement, his family said: “Oscar was truly the most amazing boy. He was smart, caring and always willing to help others.

“No matter what life threw at him, he always had a big, beautiful smile on his face.

“We’ll miss his mischievous giggle when he was up to no good, seeing his face appear through the glass door when he came home, the cuddles before bed, and the ‘sweet dreams, sleep tight, I love yous.”

Worcester Judo Club also shared a tribute to their former student, with Mr Mason being described as ‘kind and loyal’ and having ‘a heart of gold’.
