Worcester postal delays ‘not improving’ as patient has to pick up urgent medication

A frustrated councillor says patience is running out over late post as one patient was forced to collect their urgent medication from the delivery office.

In Worcester, people continue to complain they are receiving large bundles of mail in one go, with deliveries sometimes arriving three to four weeks late.

Residents have reported missing hospital letters, financial documents, and medication deliveries but Royal Mail maintains the service is improving in Worcester.

One resident had to collect his medication from the delivery office when it became urgent said Liberal Democrat councillor Sarah Murray who, together with Worcester’s Labour MP, Tom Collins, has been pressing for improvements.

Sarah Murray, Liberal Democrat councillor for St Nicholas, said: “Tom Collins MP and I are meeting Royal Mail again next Friday, and we will be pressing for answers.

“Despite repeated assurances, I’m still receiving complaints about large bundles of post arriving weeks late, missing letters and delayed deliveries of medication.

“The new DM26 delivery model was supposed to be operating by now, but I understand that staffing shortages and high sickness absence remain a problem.

“Residents have been patient for far too long.

“We need to see tangible improvements, not just further assurances.

“I’ll be taking these latest concerns directly to Royal Mail at our meeting.”

The DM26 delivery model is part of a restructuring agreement between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union.

It introduces a rotating schedule for postal workers, who spend half their time delivering first-class mail and parcels and the other half delivering all mail.

The schedule rotates fairly between workers from Monday to Friday.

Despite the changes, concerns remain.

Cllr Murray, who has previously visited the Royal Mail Delivery Office in Worcester, continues to raise the issue on behalf of residents in Warndon Villages and across the city.

She is asking residents to keep reporting missed or delayed post to help gather up-to-date evidence.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Our latest published figures show services are improving in Worcester, with 80.5% of First Class letters arriving the next working day, up from 77.0% in the previous quarter.

“We know there is much more to do and understand how important it is that customers receive their mail when expected, particularly letters about hospital appointments. We take concerns about delays seriously.

“Mail continues to be delivered across Worcester every day, although individual routes can be affected by short-term local issues. Where this happens, our teams work to deliver any outstanding mail as quickly as possible.”
