Crafting group helping to combat loneliness secures fresh funding

A community group helping to combat loneliness through arts and crafts has secured fresh funding to continue its work.

The St John’s Golden Girls Arts and Craft Group in Worcester has been awarded funding to support its weekly sessions, thanks to the Platform Housing Group’s Community Chest programme.

Based at Russell House in St John’s, the group welcomes older residents from the surrounding area to take part in creative activities, socialise, and raise money for good causes.

Val Mills from the St John’s Golden Girls said: “The group has become so much more than an arts and crafts club.

“Many of us didn’t know each other before joining and we’ve built genuine friendships and a real sense of community.

“It gives people something to look forward to every week, helps reduce loneliness and keeps us active and connected.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Platform for continuing to support us so we can keep the group going and continue raising money for local charities.”

Members create and sell handcrafted items to raise funds for organisations such as Worcester Animal Rescue Centre and St Richard’s Hospice.

The latest funding will cover the cost of materials and supplies, allowing the group to continue meeting regularly and supporting the community throughout the year.

The group attracts members from housing schemes across St John’s and offers a welcoming environment for older people to learn new skills and improve their wellbeing.

Platform’s Community Chest fund supports projects that strengthen communities, improve wellbeing and create positive opportunities for local people.
