Council seeks new operator for monthly specialist markets

Worcester City Council is searching for a new operator for its monthly specialist markets.

The markets currently include a fine food market on the first Saturday of each month and an arts and craft market on the second Saturday.

The new operator could be given some flexibility in scheduling, but the council wants at least one Saturday market each month.

Current operator Cotswold Markets has given notice it will stop running the monthly markets at the end of the year.

The council will be contacting market providers in the region to inform them of the opportunity. Experienced market operators can also contact economy@worcester.gov.uk.

Adrian Gregson, chair of the Place and Economic Development Committee, said: “The monthly specialist markets bring variety and freshness to the city centre, and we are keen to see them continue.

“We want to see markets that will complement the shops and food outlets based in the city centre, boosting Worcester’s offer as a place to visit, relax and shop.”

He said the council is also open to new ideas and themes.

The current monthly markets are held on High Street, with stalls close to the Guildhall.

Cotswold Markets also ran Worcester’s separate weekly markets until September of this year, when Bluebell Events took over and successfully relocated them from Angel Place to the Cornmarket.
