Worcester man £780 out of pocket after Royal Mail loses holiday money

A Worcester man has been left nearly £800 out of pocket after holiday money he ordered online went missing at a Worcester parcel depot.

Vince Bayliss says his money has been lost by the Royal Mail Delivery Office in Wainwright Road.

Mr Bayliss ordered £780 worth of euros through Travel FX, which promises to deliver currency “fully insured by Royal Mail Special Delivery.”

But the cash never arrived – a note was left saying a delivery had been attempted in June but there was no second attempt. And despite multiple visits to the Wainwright Road depot, Mr Bayliss had to make a last-minute trip to Tesco to get his euros – at a worse exchange rate – for his trip to Benidorm.

Since returning from his holiday, Mr Bayliss has made more attempts to track down the missing money but says Royal Mail “just don’t care.”

“I’ve had no apology, no money and now councillor Sarah Murray and MP Tom Collins are involved,” he said.

“The whole scenario is embarrassing. The customer service has been non-existent.

“I spoke to a manager in London on the phone, and he was snobbish and arrogant.

“Eventually, they told me to deal with Travel FX directly, which I did, but it’s been four weeks since then. Should I take it to the police?”

City councillor Sarah Murray said: “I’ve been involved in Vince’s case for some time and raised it directly with Royal Mail at our recent meeting.

“What I find particularly concerning is that this wasn’t an item that simply went missing somewhere in the postal network.

“A delivery was attempted, Vince wasn’t at home, and I was told at the meeting that the item had been returned to the delivery office. At some point after that, it disappeared.

“We’re talking about £780 of travel money sent by Special Delivery. Residents rightly expect items sent through a premium tracked service to be secure, and more than a month later, Vince is still waiting for a resolution.

Many cases of delayed post – but this one stands out

“I’ve been contacted by many residents about delayed post, but this case stands out because of the value involved and the fact that Royal Mail appears to know the item made it back to the delivery office before it went missing.

“I think residents will want answers as to how that could happen and what is being done to put it right.

“My priority is making sure Vince gets a resolution and that residents can have confidence that important and valuable items are being handled safely.

“Since my meeting with Royal Mail and Tom Collins MP, I have sought a specific update on what action is being taken to resolve this case.

“Given the value of the missing item and the time that has already elapsed, I believe the resident deserves clear answers and a swift resolution.

“I await a formal response.”

Mr Collins was unavailable for comment but has previously criticised Royal Mail for postal delays in Worcester.

Royal Mail and Travel FX have been asked for comment.
