A COMMUNITY has gathered at a popular pub for a family fun day aimed at raising thousands for charity.
The Goodrest Tavern on Barker Street played host to a family fun day today (July 25), three years after the first raised more than £2,000 for Dementia UK.
This year the event will also raise money for Cancer Research UK, with a number of people in the community having had recent cancer scares.

The family fun day is the brainchild of Claire Wilkes and her friends.
She said: “It is a charity family fun day in aid of Dementia UK and Cancer Research UK.
“Just a day to get everyone together from the community, raising awareness for the two charities.
“It was started originally because of my grandad, who passed away three years ago. I did it three years ago for just Dementia UK.
“This year we opened it up to Cancer Research UK because a few close people to me have had cancer scares and a few of my friends have recently lost parents young to cancer. This is the second event after we ran one three years ago.

“My best friend and her mum said to me in January, I think we should do another charity day, so I was like ok, we will do it small. But then a fortnight from it, I thought, you know what, we are going big or going home.
The family fun day at The Goodrest Tavern had facepainting, name the dragon, live music, tombola, a bouncy castle, and more.

Claire Wilkes added: “Last time we raised £2,500 for Dementia UK. Hopefully we will raise a similar amount today or maybe more to split between the two charities.
“The event will be going on all evening. Numbers so far are looking good.
“Last time it rained all day, so I’m glad we’ve got the weather this time.
“It would not have been possible without my friends Kate Burton, Julie Hardman, and others who have worked so hard behind the scenes.”
