Decision made over contested plan to build 40-bedroom HMO

A CONTESTED plan to create what would have been one of the biggest HMOs in Worcester has been dropped.

Applicant Liquat Ali had intended to turn Practical Car and Van Rental in Westbury Street into a house of multiple occupation.

Neighbours had objected, with one saying that she did not believe the building would be “able to accommodate 40 separate living units” and would cause “immense” noise and inconvenience to people living nearby.

“There is bound to be a lot more noise during the evenings and nights with at least 40 residents,” the objector said.

‘Our historic street has been taken over by HMOs – it’s like a student ghetto”

As reported by the Worcester News in December, the building would have had the bedrooms plus a utility room, lobby and kitchen areas.

Only the Farrier House student accommodation in Farrier Street, which can accommodate up to 69 residents, would have been bigger than the proposed Westbury Street development, according to Worcester City Council documents.

The application to the local authority has since been withdrawn, the planning register shows.
