These Worcestershire locations leave tourists tongue-tied – can you pronounce them?

Worcestershire is home to a host of place names that often leave visitors tongue-tied.

From the county name itself to nearby villages and towns, a number of locations regularly trip up tourists with tricky spellings and unexpected pronunciations.

Even Worcestershire itself is frequently mispronounced. We’ve head everything from ‘Wor-chester-shyre’ to ‘Wor-ses-ter-sheer’. 

The correct way to say it is ‘Wus-ter-sheer’.

Bevere

Bevere is another spot that can confuse newcomers. Many assume it is pronounced ‘Beveer’, but the correct pronunciation is ‘Bev-er-ee’.

Kempsey

Kempsey is also commonly mispronounced, with many unaware that the ‘p’ is silent.

The correct way to say it is ‘Kem-see’.

Malvern

Even Malvern, which might seem straightforward, is sometimes said incorrectly.

The most frequent mistake is using a flat ‘A’,  as in the word “malice.”

However, the proper pronunciation is ‘Mol-vern’.
