West Mercia Police take “incredibly high” number of calls due to heatwave

POLICE are taking an “incredibly high” volume of calls because of the heatwave.

West Mercia Police has reported an incredibly high volume of 999 and 101 calls during the heatwave and is urging the public to only use these lines for genuine emergencies to help operators respond as quickly as possible.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “The heatwave is making our phone lines red-hot.

“Our 999 and 101 teams are facing an incredibly high volume of calls.

“To help us answer urgent calls as quickly as possibly, we need your help to make sure you’re dialling the right number for the right reason.”

The force reminded residents that 999 is only for emergencies, such as a crime in progress, someone in immediate danger, or a risk to life.

The public should use the 101 line for non-emergencies or to report crimes that have already happened.

West Mercia Police also encouraged residents to use its website to report non-urgent incidents online, reducing call centre pressure.

The spokesperson added: “Thank you for helping us keep the lines free for those who need us the most.

“Check on your vulnerable neighbours, stay hydrated, slap on the sunscreen, look out for each other, and enjoy the sun safely.”

Residents are also reminded to use the correct services for issues such as noise complaints, water leaks, or medical advice to avoid unnecessary calls to the police.

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for Wednesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 25 due to extreme heat.
