Volunteers create poppy cascades for two churches

Hundreds of handmade poppies will form striking cascades at two Worcestershire churches this Remembrance Sunday, thanks to a year-long volunteer project.

Inspired by the poppy display at St John’s Church, Worcester, a member of the Knightwick and District Royal British Legion proposed a similar project for Broadwas church.

A call for help was sent out via the parish magazine, Footprints, for anyone who could knit, crochet or sew to come forward to make hundreds of poppies.

It was answered by many, including groups from St John’s, Broadwas, Cotheridge, Knightwick, and Worcester with groups meeting to work on the task over the past year.

One group met in Cotheridge church to mount the poppies with the Broadwas Friday sewing group doing the same. In just a few short weeks they had made enough poppies for not only St Mary Magdalene in Broadwas but also St Leonard’s in Cotheridge.

The Royal British Legion Branch thanked all those who have contributed.

A service of remembrance will be held at 10.45am on Sunday, November 8 at Broadwas Church and parishioners are encouraged to attend and see its cascade.
