A vibrant celebration of South Asian culture is set to return with its own standalone event this summer.
Worcester Mela Festival will take place on Sunday, July 5, from 11am to 7pm at the University of Worcester City Campus, featuring a packed day of music, food, dance and community activities for all ages.
This is the first year the event will be held independently from the Worcester Show.
The festival will feature live performances from artists including Awantika Dubey, Tariq Saher and the Dhol Crew.
Visitors can also enjoy street food, workshops, family activities and friendly competitions such as shoot volleyball and tug of war.
The festival marks the launch of Threads of Unity, a month-long programme of events for South Asian Heritage Month.
This will begin with a VIP event on July 1 and continue with performances and experiences across the city throughout July.
Highlights from Threads of Unity include the family performance Mughal Miniatures by Sonia Sabri Co, Qawwali Night with Salim Sabri Group, and the internationally acclaimed music collaboration Seven Eyes.
Jabba Riaz, chair of Worcester Mela, said: “Worcester Mela Festival has grown year on year thanks to the fantastic support of our communities, partners and our involvement in the Worcester Show.
“That experience has given us the confidence and foundations to take the next step and present the festival as a standalone event for the first time.
“We’re incredibly excited to welcome people from across Worcester and beyond to join us this July.
“Whether you’re attending the festival, taking part in Threads of Unity events, trying new food, enjoying performances or spending time with family and friends, there’s something for everyone.
“At its heart, Worcester Mela is about bringing people together through culture, creativity and shared experiences.”
The Worcester Mela is part of Local Voices, Creative Choices, a two-year programme aimed at developing the cultural life of Worcester through arts projects, festivals and new creative opportunities.
