Latest after large group of travellers set up camp on estate over bank holiday

A LARGE group of travellers have set up camp on a new-build estate in Droitwich.

The group, which consists of at least eight caravans, set up camp on open space off Wildlife Way in Droitwich on Thursday (May 21) evening.

Cllr Dan Birch has been in talks with the group, who told him that they would be leaving by Tuesday (May 26)

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “This happened last years as well.

“So far, they have not been causing any trouble, but it’s a large group which could be intimidating for others.

“They have piled up their rubbish, and most of it is in black bin bags, so hopefully that will continue.

“I heard the police had been and visited them, but I didn’t see it.

“Hopefully, they will be peaceful and not leave the place a mess for us to clean up.”

It is understood that the land has not been adopted by Wychavon District Council, and is instead managed by FirstPort.

Cllr Dan Birch said: “We are aware of the travellers on Wildlife Way.

“They said they will move by Tuesday.

“The group arrived at around 10pm on Thursday night.

“We’ve been chasing FirstPort, the management company for the estate, to get barriers installed for a year now.

“Last year, the same thing happened, and any costs related to the removal were recharged to residents.

“Because barriers are not in place, we are trying to ensure the same thing does not happen again.”

A spokesperson for FirstPort said: “We understand residents’ concerns regarding the unauthorised encampment and appreciate the impact situations of this nature can have on the local community.

“Preventative measures to vulnerable access points, were already in place; however, access was gained via an alternative route.

“The situation has been reported and is being managed in line with the appropriate legal processes, in coordination with the relevant authorities, including local police. We will continue to work with relevant partners to support a resolution as quickly and appropriately as possible.”

Wychavon District Council and West Mercia Police have been approached for comment.
