Controversial van with cheeky slogan subject to enforcement action

A van with a cheeky advert parked on a bridge over a motorway is being investigated by an enforcement team as a breach of planning rules.

The Volkswagen flatbed belonging to Beast Sheds has spent months parked on the A44 Spetchley Road bridge on the southbound side out of Worcester.

However, the van, parked in the bridge, is now the subject to an enforcement investigation by the council.

A Worcester City Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we are currently investigating the matter as an alleged breach of planning control. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.”

A timber structure on the van bears a message which reads ‘free erection all over the UK’ and the front bonnet has the slogan ‘free delivery, free erection’.

Located between junction 6 and junction 7 of the motorway – one of the busiest routes out of the city – the van has been in place so long it has even drawn speculation that it has been used in a police speed trap.

Drivers said earlier this year that the police were using the van to screen off a camera trap on the other side of the A44 bridge.

In a Facebook group dedicated to speed camera locations, one wrote: ”Opposite side of where that shed van is, is usually a police van, I see it nearly every day when I go over the bridge.”

Another replied: “They’ve been there very frequently since the shed appeared, hiding behind the shed to get people as they pass the bridge.

“Sneaky really.”

Cllr Sarah Murray, a Liberal Democrat councillor for St Nicholas in Warndon Villages, said: “As the matter is currently under investigation, it would not be appropriate for me to comment on the specifics or prejudge the outcome.

“More broadly, residents rightly expect planning rules to be applied fairly and consistently. Where concerns are raised, it is important that they are investigated thoroughly and that any decisions are made on the basis of the evidence and the planning policies in place.”
