Church opens doors for special prayers after death of village girl

A VILLAGE church is extending its opening hours and holding special prayers for those wishing to pay their respects following the death of an 11-year-old girl in Elmley Castle.

St Mary’s Church in Elmley Castle will remain open until 9pm today, offering the community a place to light a candle of remembrance, reflect quietly, or spend time in prayer.

The church will also hold Evening Prayer at 5pm today (Tuesday), with prayers being said for the young girl, whose death has deeply affected the local community.

The move comes as tributes continue to be paid following the tragedy, including a number of floral tributes and teddies being laid on a bench near where the girl was found.

The girl’s death has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from residents across the area, with many sharing messages of support for her family and friends.

Police have previously urged people not to speculate online about the circumstances surrounding her death while enquiries continue.

The extended opening hours and dedicated prayer services are open to anyone who would like to attend.

A spokesperson for St Mary’s Church said: “Following the death of the young girl in Elmley Castle yesterday, St Mary’s Church remains open for prayer.

“Do continue to pray for all those affected by this terrible tragedy.”
