Couple raise more than £8,000 in memory of baby daughter

A couple have raised over £8,000 in memory of their baby daughter who was stillborn.

Callum and Leigh O’Reilly’s baby daughter, Elsie Violet Doris O’Reilly, was stillborn at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on March 8.

This came three days after Leigh, from Kidderminster, was told that her daughter’s heart had stopped beating after a period of reduced movement.

During the “incredibly difficult” loss of their baby, they were “hugely supported” by the hospital’s specialist bereavement team.

Now, Callum and Leigh are determined to raise awareness about stillbirths, and organised a fundraising day on August 7 to raise over £4,000 for the Worcestershire Maternity Bereavement Ward.

Sister-in-law Sheena Geddes, who is a proud aunt to Elsie, said: “There was an incredible turnout and people were so very generous. As you can imagine, we were very overwhelmed and didn’t expect it at all.

“The final balance we raised on the night was £4,130.50 which has taken our overall total to more than £8,000 on the GoFundMe page,”

The quiz night took place at Kidderminster Cricket Club on Friday (August 7) from 7pm.

It was £5 entry per person with all funds raised going towards the Worcestershire Maternity Bereavement Ward.

The night included a raffle and an auction with several top prizes on offer, including beauty vouchers, outdoor photoshoots, pub and town hall vouchers and more.

Donations are also still being accepted for the bereavement ward on Just Giving.

Sheena Geddes said: “I couldn’t be prouder of Leigh and Callum for everything they are doing to help raise awareness for stillbirths. The loss of Elsie has been devastating and the grief is unimaginable.

“To want to focus on raising funds for the bereavement service, and think about other families who might go through this in the future, despite their own grief, is so incredibly brave.

“They are so selfless, and their determination to help others is remarkable.”
