Audiences are gearing up for a remarkable run of locally rooted, history-rich theatre productions.
Award-winning writer-director Rachel Tobin is bringing two productions to Studio One, Malvern Theatres, and the Tuckwell Open-Air Theatre Festival in Cheltenham on Sunday, August 23, at 1pm.
Each play will highlight remarkable individuals whose determination, imagination, and courage shaped cultural life in Britain.
Theatre of Dreams celebrates Rowena Cade, the visionary behind Cornwall’s Minack Theatre.
It follows Cade from her Edwardian childhood in Cheltenham to her wartime work breaking in Canadian horses.
She then purchased a Cornish headland for £100 and with gardener Billy Rawlings began the near‑impossible task of building an open‑air theatre using hand tools, grit, and the occasional stick of dynamite.
This gripping new drama is produced by Malvern Skyline Productions, featuring actors Joe Dunnett, Jenna Rodway, Steve Quick, and Kelly Costigan.
Performances at Malvern Theatres – Studio One will be on Friday 28 and Saturday, August 29 at 5pm and 7pm.
On Sunday, August 30, The Last Free Rave will return in Studio One at 5pm and 7pm.
This play, another of Tobin’s creations, features Jenna Rodway, Steve Quick, Susan Smith, and Kelly Costigan in its ensemble cast.
Turning the spotlight on Dame Laura Knight, “Storm Over Our Town – Malvern’s Rebel Dame” will portray the journey of one of Britain’s most cherished artists.
Dame Laura, who made Malvern her home for over three decades, juggled her artistic pursuits with the relentless struggle of establishing herself in a male-dominated art world.
She became a Dame of the British Empire, all while maintaining a strong connection to Malvern’s creative community.
The production is a vivid portrait of a trailblazer performed by Malvern Skyline Productions and directed by Rachel Tobin.
Its performances at Malvern Theatres – Studio One are scheduled for Saturday, October 3 at 5pm and 7pm, and Sunday, October 4 at 3pm.
