RESIDENTS in Malvern awoke to the smell of smoke after reports that it had drifted from a wildfire.
In local online groups, residents shared that they had noticed the smell early on Sunday morning (August 9), including on North Hill, Cowleigh Road and even as far as Madresfield.
There were also reports that firefighters had been up on the Malvern Hills, attempting to locate the source of the smoke.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said no fire had been found and that it was a “false alarm”.

Smoke drifting from Welsh wildfire
However, Hereford Fire Station said on Saturday night (August 8) that smoke from a wildfire near Ebbw Vale in South Wales had drifted into parts of Herefordshire.
It shared advice from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, which urged anyone who could smell smoke to keep their doors and windows closed.

“Firefighters from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to tackle a moorland wildfire near Llangynidr Reservoir,” a spokesperson said.
“Crews are working alongside partner agencies and specialist contractors to contain the fire, which remains challenging due to the wind.
“Please do not fly drones near the incident. Unauthorised drones can interfere with emergency operations and prevent firefighters from using specialist equipment to safely manage the incident.
“If you are affected by smoke, please keep windows and doors closed. Anyone experiencing health concerns should seek appropriate medical advice.
“Please avoid the area and allow emergency services to continue their work safely.”
