Retail tycoon’s hotel named AA Restaurant with Rooms of the Year

A boutique hotel has been named AA Restaurant with Rooms of the Year – England.

House of George in Broadway received the honour from the AA, which recognises leading hospitality venues that excel in accommodation, dining, service, and overall guest experience.

The award comes just a year after the hotel first opened and adds to a growing list of accolades, including two AA Rosettes and a place in the Michelin Guide 2026.

A spokesperson for House of George said: “We are incredibly proud to have been named AA Restaurant with Rooms of the Year – England, one of the AA’s highest hospitality accolades, recognising excellence across accommodation, dining, service, and the overall guest experience.”

Adding to this success, the House of George has also been shortlisted for the AA National Restaurant with Rooms of the Year title, with the overall UK winner to be announced at the AA Hospitality Awards on September 21.

The hotel is the creation of George Davies, the designer and entrepreneur behind Next, George at ASDA, and Per Una at Marks & Spencer, and his wife Arlene.

It is set in a restored 17th-century limestone building that combines historic character with modern design, featuring 10 individually styled bedrooms, a bar, a snug, and a private dining room.

At the heart of the property is Moda, a 30-cover fine dining restaurant offering an ever-changing tasting menu as well as small and large plate options for lunch.

The menu focuses on locally sourced Cotswold produce.

Every detail of the property reflects the Davies’ emphasis on British craftsmanship, including bespoke furniture, fabrics, and artwork.

Mr Davies, who has lived near Broadway for more than 30 years, said he was eager to bring his design expertise into the hospitality sector and create an elevated guest experience.

An AA inspector described it as “a modern retelling of the Cotswolds country house tradition,” highlighting its thoughtful design, outstanding dining and welcoming atmosphere.

Mrs Davies, who co-founded the hotel and led its interiors and design, drew on her diploma from the National Design Academy for inspiration.

She continues to support local creatives and artisans in the Cotswolds.
