Gigabit broadband coverage reaches 88 percent in Worcestershire

GIGABIT broadband coverage has reached 88 percent across Worcestershire.

Robert Stepniewski, Worcestershire County Council’s digital infrastructure and connectivity manager, said the government’s £41m Project Gigabit programme will boost that number.

According to a council report the scheme has already reached homes in Lower Broadheath, Hallow, Powick and Callow End.

Adam Kent, cabinet member for finance, business and skills, said alternative broadband providers such as Starlink, which uses satellites to provide home wifi, can help ‘fill the gaps’ in rural areas that are hard for traditional broadband rollouts to reach.

Mr Stepniewski, speaking at a meeting of the council’s environment overview and scrutiny panel on Monday, July 6, said wireless broadband providers are also expanding across the county.
