FOR RESIDENTS in landlocked Worcestershire who are craving the sea air, Weston Super Mare has long been the default day-trip destination.
It’s close, convenient, and packed with familiar seaside staples – but there is an unspoiled stretch of coast that is worth residents going the extra mile for.
But tucked a little further west lies a stretch of coastline that quietly eclipses it in almost every way — Rhossili Bay.

Jagged cliffs, sweeping sands and a dramatic shipwreck make this Gower Peninsula gem feel worlds away from the bustle of Weston, yet it’s still within striking distance for a weekend escape.
It is around two and a half hours by car from Worcester.
The shipwreck that steals the show
One of Rhossili Bay’s most distinctive features is the remains of the Helvetia, a Norwegian ship that ran aground in 1887.

Its skeletal wreckage, partially exposed and partially buried in the sand, provides a dramatic reminder of the bay’s maritime history.
Why may it beat Weston Super Mare?
While Rhossili lacks the arcades, donkey rides, and seaside amusements found at Weston, it is better suited to those looking for quieter sands and striking scenery.
