Popular pub in churchyard to close temporarily as landlord departs

A PUB famed for sitting in a churchyard is set to temporarily close as the family who have been landlords for over two decade depart.

The Mug House, Claines, is well-known for being one of the only pubs in the UK to sit on consecrated land.

The pub has been run by the Allen family for over two decades, first by Judy Allen, and now by son Russell Allen, but this dynasty is set to come to a close following the departure of Mr Allen.

A notice on the entrance to the pub read: “It is with regret that we announce the closure of our pub effective from Monday, June 1, due to Russell’s ill-health.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, and we are grateful for the memories, laughter, and good times shared within these walls,

“We would like to sincerely thank all of our customers, staff, and local supporters who have been part of our journey of the years.

“Your loyalty and support have meant a great deal to us and have helped make the pub a valued part of the community.”

Following Mr Allen’s departure, the pub will return to owner Marston’s.

While no reopening date has been revealed, The Mug House is expected to welcome patrons again in the coming weeks.
