Society marks 75th anniversary with special events during Elgar Festival

A society is marking its 75th anniversary with special events during this year’s Elgar Festival.

The Elgar Society, one of the UK’s largest single-composer societies, is hosting both a lecture and a lunch on the final day of the festival in Worcester, which celebrates the life and music of Edward Elgar.

The A.T. Shaw Lecture, taking place on May 31, at 11am at Henry Sandon Hall, will feature renowned recording producer Andrew Keener in conversation with Kenneth Woods, artistic director of the Elgar Festival. They will discuss Mr Keener’s studio work with prominent Elgar conductors and instrumentalists from the 1980s to the present day.

Mr Woods said: “The Elgar Society plays an important part in our annual festival; with this year marking its 75th anniversary we are delighted to welcome them back.”

Entry to the lecture is free.

Following the talk, the Elgar Society Lunch will be held at midday at the Museum of Royal Worcester. Tickets are £32 per person and must be booked in advance by emailing chairman@elgarsociety.org.

The wider Elgar Festival runs from May 23 to May 31, and this year includes a packed schedule of 27 events across 15 venues. The programme features concerts, recitals, talks, exhibitions, workshops and street performances.

Since its launch in 2018 as a Worcester City Council initiative, the festival has doubled in size and continues to grow. It brings together internationally recognised professional artists, amateur musicians and performers of all ages.

The festival is a celebration of Elgar’s lasting legacy, with symphonic and string orchestra concerts. The English Symphony Orchestra will feature prominently, along with chamber, choral and miniatures performances.
