BISHOP of Worcester Hugh Nelson visited Hartlebury Castle, continuing a long-established connection between the castle, its bishops and Hartlebury Castle Trust.
Hartlebury Castle was home to the bishops of Worcester until 2007, and parts of its collection still belong to the church and bishop.
Bishop Hugh recently paid a visit to see his predecessors’ former home and discover more about how their history is shared with the public.
The visit was part of plans to continue the longstanding connection between the castle, its history and the presiding Bishop of Worcester.
The castle uses talking portraits, hands-on exhibitions, and secret rooms to share the stories of former bishops, many of whom impacted society and the nation.
The bishop also learnt about the castle itself and the many additional stories that it holds.
In addition, Bishop Hugh’s visit was an opportunity to see his book collection, which was left by Bishop Hurd to all the future bishops of Worcester in perpetuity.
The collection contains books dating between the late 15th to 18th centuries and covers topics going well beyond theology.
It also includes books given to Bishop Hurd by King George III, featuring his signature.
Bishop Hugh said, “It is wonderful to see the stories from this historic seat being shared with the public.”
He added: “The books in the Hurd Library were absolutely fascinating.”
Richard Amphlett, chair of Hartlebury Castle Trust, said, “We were delighted to welcome Bishop Hugh and Lizzie Nelson, to the Castle.
“Since the formation of the trust there has been a strong partnership with the Bishop and Diocese of Worcester team, and it is great to see that continue into this new era.”
Formerly the home to the bishops of Worcester until 2007, Hartlebury Castle shares the stories of the bishops and the many others who lived and worked at the castle.
Hartlebury Castle Trust’s vision is to use these stories and its beautiful grounds to encourage reflection on how history influenced and mirrors today, whilst providing a fun day out for all ages.
Bishop Hugh said: “Hearing Hartlebury Castle’s vision, I am excited for the continuation of our relationship.”
