Baby signing class celebrates new Peppa Pig storyline at Easter party

A baby signing class combined its Easter party with a celebration of a landmark storyline in children’s TV show Peppa Pig.

On Tuesday (March 31) the group held its Easter party, with families getting dressed up in Easter-themed fancy dress.

TinyTalk teacher Mollie Prior, who is currently completing her Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language, said: “Easter is the perfect time to celebrate the natural burst into spring with lots of fun for our parents and little ones.

“New beginnings, new opportunities and new recognition. Peppa Pig’s brother George being diagnosed as deaf means that the deaf community are now being represented from a young age.”

In the first episode of season 11, George is diagnosed as moderately deaf and fitted with a hearing aid.

The new hearing loss storyline was developed in collaboration with the National Deaf Children’s Society.

George Crockford, Chief Executive of the NDCS, highlighted the importance of representation in television. He said: “Representation matters, and it’s vital that deaf children see their experiences portrayed authentically and positively.

“Introducing this storyline in a series as loved as Peppa Pig is an important step towards creating a world where anything is possible for deaf children – a world where differences are understood and every child feels seen, valued and included.”
